Why Voice Matters for the Future of Games, XR, And Computing
Stellar Cafe is part of the first chapter in what we believe is a next era for both games and computing: using your voice as the primary input via natural communication.

Speech is a fundamental interaction in our day to day lives, but it use in games has been very limited, due to fundamental limitations of technology. Leveraging recent breakthroughs, we set out to change this and bring more of you into your games.

Devin (AstroBeam founder) has been hard at work for the last decade striving to make VR better and more natural. From pioneering spatial computing interaction with Job Simulator, to hand tracking with Vacation Simulator. But, there has always been one core interaction that was missing, being heard.

Currently, most video games talk at you. Characters deliver scripted lines, and you respond by choosing from a menu or pressing a button. Those interactions are fun, but they’re also very limited.

What happens when the world listens? When you can speak naturally, without breaking the flow of the experience, and the characters not only understand you but remember you, respond to you, and adapt to you? This what we’ve been building, a whole new infrastructure and set of game designs, that leverages large language models to power voice-based interaction.

Every robot you meet in Stellar Cafe has been hand-crafted by our team with their own personalities, histories, goals, and quirks. But when you talk to them, AI helps bring those characters to life in the moment. They improvise, remember who you are, and respond naturally by maintaining the context of your conversation and the world around them.

It’s also important to us that this future isn’t just technically impressive, but also player focused. That’s why every system we use in Stellar Cafe is built around clear guardrails, character boundaries, and safeguards. Large language models are one of the tools, but the heart of the experience comes from the unique human design. We are also very excited to showcase new types of accessible gameplay to enable player unable to rely on traditional controls.

When you step into Stellar Cafe later this year on Meta Quest, you’ll get a glimpse of what’s possible when games starts listening.
